Planning to offer drink specials? Here’s what you need to know.
Drink specials are a great way to bring extra business to your establishment. Remember in South Carolina there are regulations governing the discount pricing of alcohol. You can find individual regulations from the South Carolina Department of Revenue ABL Division Here. Check out these tips before you advertise that drink special in South Carolina:
▶️ Can my restaurant offer free beverages?
❌ No. If you hold an on-premises license to sell beer, wine, or liquor by the drink, you cannot give those beverages away for free. In fact, you may not sell those beverages for less than half of the price you normally charge.
▶️ Can I offer Happy Hour specials?
✔️ Yes, but only between the hours of 4-8 pm. During your Happy Hour, you may not sell beverages for less than half of the price you would normally charge.
▶️ What about “Buy One, Get One Free” specials?
❌ No. South Carolina law specifically prohibits businesses from selling alcoholic beverages on a “two or more for the price of one” basis for on-premises consumption.
▶️ Last one — can my restaurant offer weekly specials?
✔️ Yes, restaurants may offer discounts on alcohol on certain days but only if that discounted price is applied to all purchases of that beverage on that day, and on the same days each week.
